The Department of Industrial Engineering was established on the 19th of October 1986. The Department goal is to contribute through the bigger role of the University of Jordan to the technological and scientific advancement of Jordanian and Arab societies. The main objectives of the Department are:
- To help generate the Industrial Engineering support vital to the development of manufacturing activities in Jordan.
- To encourage research, particularly in the M.Sc. level, addressing local industrial problems with the objective of improving productivity and quality of products.
- To offer technical short-term training and consultancy to public and private institutions in the areas of Quality Control, Productivity Analysis, Human Factors, Engineering Safety, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Operations Management, Materials Management, Automatic Control, Modern Management Systems and Manufacturing Technology.
Enrolment in the Industrial Engineering Department started in the first semester of the academic year 1987/1988 with a total of 25 students. During the establishment phase, the number of academic staff was four compared to a present number of fifteen. The present level of student enrolment in the Department is 302 students in the B.Sc. program and 59 students in the M.Sc. program.
The department is well equipped with Manufacturing Processes, Materials Testing, Metrology, Control and Instrumentation, Human Factors, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing laboratories. These laboratories are utilized for teaching, training, and research. Computer support for teaching and research activities is provided by the University Computer Centre and the faculty facilities.
The workshops of the Department are equipped with all necessary equipment to provide all first year engineering students with training in traditional areas of fitting, machining, forming fabrication, foundry processes and welding. It also has facilities for training in carpentry operations. In addition, the workshops are utilized to provide the more–advanced Industrial Engineering students with an opportunity to acquire experience of practical nature in manufacturing processes. The workshops also offer production services to all engineering departments and the University as a whole. Such services include the manufacturing of a wide variety of products from basic furniture to simple research kits.
